Hail Damage

In order to better understand hail damage we first need to understand what hail is and where it comes from. Hail is a solid form of precipitation that, in some cases, can even pose danger to us. Although often confused with ice pellets, hail is quite different. Hail is solid ice formed inside thunderstorm updrafts typically shaped like balls or lumps, exhibited during low surface temps. The balls can typically range from ¼" or the size of a pea to 2.75" baseballs. This means the damage can range from cosmetic damage to performance-affecting damage. In either case causing damage to your home.

How do we identify the damage caused by the hail storm?

It is important to know that because hail varies in size, some damage may require being up close and personal to find. Meaning checking for damage can entail going on your roof. We strongly recommend finding a professional who can inspect your roof to avoid injury.

Once on the roof, we search for small divots on your gutters; these indicate impact.

Another thing we look for on the roof is round black areas on your shingles where the ice pellets have caused granule loss, or even just bruising, as this can lead to deterioration of the shingle. After the storm, we may also find your gutters to be clogged due to the granule loss from the shingles.

From the ground we may look for dings. These dings can be found all around your house's siding, on vents on the roof, on the sides of your house, as well as on your downspouts.

Now that we have established the damage, what can I do? It's just a few dings on the roof, can I just ignore it?

In short, yes you absolutely can just ignore it, that's actually the simplest solution, until it isn't.

Depending on the storm, because hail storms are not uniform, you may have been lucky enough to only have gotten a little bit of hail and minimal to no damage. But in most cases, hail holds no mercy for anyone's roof. Once your roof has been hit by a hail storm it loses integrity. A roof that was once built to withstand the test of time will deteriorate more and more as time goes by, but when nature strikes this hard it will speed up the deterioration of your roof. If ignored it, it will lead to things like

  • Water damage inside your home.

  • Wood Rot

  • Mold

  • Electrical issues

  • Leaks

  • Ice dams
